The corporation, formed in 1804, was responsible to build a turnpike [a predecessor of Mass. Highway 2] from Concord to Leominster, connecting the Cambridge and Concord Turnpike, and the 5th Mass. Turnpike. Elm Street in Concord, Mass. (named officially in 1854) was part of the Union Turnpike.

Harriet Hanson Robinson lived with her husband William Steven Robinson in Concord from 1844 to 1857. She published a memoir of her husband with title: "Warrington" pen-portraits in 1877. In her diary she described her feelings about living in Concord, and commented about the town as being "dull," "narrow," "snobbish," etc.
